Institute of Biotechnology
Development Directions

Biotechnology is a cross-disciplinary science. The Institute, designing a programme distinct from that of other education providers, focuses its development and research directions on biotechnology, which has an enormous potential for expanding into an industry. In other words, the Institute targets at industrial application, which may guide fundamental academic studies toward the mastery of research. With regard to research areas, the Institute attaches high priority to the local technological industries that can be developed at present or in the future. In response to the overall development of the country, the Institute also aims to cultivate advanced professionals of biotechnology for the establishment of Kaohsiung Second Technology Corridor in the future. Rigidly defined, the principle development direction of the Institute is on “research and application of genetic engineering technology”.

Development Missions

The curriculum of the Institute puts emphasis on the theories and applications of molecular biology in order to nurture professionals for national biotech industries. Key areas of expertise include:

Cloning of useful genes: to select genes of industrial potential from animals, plants and organisms.
Study of the characteristics of useful genes
Research and establishment of genetic modification technology

To conduct these researches successfully, our professors will tap a wide range of advanced knowledge and technologies of biology. In addition, the Institute will recruit well-qualified teachers of relevant expertise to our faculty. Our teaching staff is supported by the Department of Life Sciences for the time being. In the future, we plan to employ teachers with research ability as well as considerable interest in both teaching and service. Priority for employment will be given to senior professors with excellent research. Junior teachers will be assessed by their potential and ability of coordination and collaboration. The Institute will offer the maximum assistance to teachers' academic research.

Curriculum

In the early phases, students will be given fundamental biotechnological courses. After the establishment of the Institute of Bioenvironmental Sciences , the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology and the Institute of Chinese Herbal Medicine under the College, we will cooperate with each other and provide programmes in different biotech areas, hoping that our students could receive a more complete training in their postgraduate studies.

Acknowledging the above mentioned development directions, the curriculum is especially designed to cultivate students in biotech knowledge and technologies through a combination of lectures and laboratory courses. We hope that our students should be well equipped with sound biotechnological theories and abundant experiences for experiment. The first-year curriculum includes fundamental biotechnological theories and experiment of techniques; the second-year curriculum focuses on specific realms of a variety of biotechnological industries. We aim to nurture biotechnological professionals in a systematic and step-by-step approach, which goes from the easy to the difficult. Through the well-designed courses and modules, students may form their own interest in numerous biotechnological research areas.

Career Opportunities

According to the written agreement on strategic alliance and collaboration entered into by National University of Kaohsiung with the Promotion Committee of Kaohsiung Biotech Industrial Park, Kaohsiung Biotech Centre will be set up in the University. Upon the completion of this project, the career opportunities for our graduates will be greatly increased due to the collaboration with the industrial circle.

In response to the development of national biotech industries, the Institute will work closely with a number of biotechnology providers, such as the scientific industrial parks in Tainan, Kaohsiung and Luzhu, the agricultural section of Taiwan Sugar Corporation, the potential department of environmental technology of Chinese Petroleum Corporation and the biotechnological divisions of other colleges and universities, in the hope of providing our advanced research professionals for this institute.
