Development Directions

A close link with the academic research of the South Taiwan. The establishment of the Department is based on the resource availability and future development of the South Taiwan . Considering the Kaohsiung Biotechnology Industrial Park to be built soon, industrial parks of the South, and the environment of the Kaohsiung area, we offer a variety of courses in biotechnology-related fields to prepare for the establishment of the Kaohsiung Second Technology Corridor.

Complete and flexible course modules
The design of the course modules is to integrate undergraduate and research programmes, and then develop three major studies: molecular and cellular biology, biotechnology and bioenvironmental sciences. Our students can receive systematic training in the courses they take.

Integration of curricula, space and resources
The Department and other institutes under the College of Life Sciences co-employ teachers to coordinate teaching and research. In addition, the facilities and space of the College can be fully utilised, so as to equip every single student with complete academic knowledge and practical training of modern biotechnology.
Development Missions

Biotechnology is one of important industry that the Government is vigorously promoting at present. Its fundamental education and industrial development are also of the Government's utmost concern. Consequently, our graduates could have a broad range of choices for higher education and career. They can go in for advanced studies in the four institutes established consecutively under the College or in other domestic and overseas institutes of life sciences. In terms of career opportunities, our graduates can either engage in research in public science-based institutions or work for private biotechnological corporations, taking part in the production, research and development of health service, medicine, agriculture, fishery, food or environmental protection.

According to the written agreement on strategic alliance and collaboration entered into by National University of Kaohsiung with the Promotion Committee of Kaohsiung Biotech Industrial Park, Kaohsiung Biotech Research Centre will be set up in the University. Kaohsiung Development Centre for Biotechnology Corporation has stationed itself in the Advanced Business Incubation Centre on campus, and is actively making preparations for the establishment of Kaohsiung Biotech Centre. Upon the completion of this project, the career opportunities for our graduates will be greatly increased due to the collaboration with the industrial circle.

The goals of the Department are to enhance the integration of fundamental research and applied research, so as to maximise research effects, promote qualities of the teaching staff, and increase research outcome. In addition, different fields of studies will be combined to form by a cooperative relationship with the joining of the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of Applied Chemistry, the Department of Kinesiology, Health and Leisure Studies, and the Department of Applied Physics so that the academic studies can be successfully applied to industrial practices.

In response to the development of national biotech industries, the Department will work closely with a number of biotechnology providers, such as the scientific industrial parks in Tainan, Kaohsiung and Luzhu, the agricultural section of Taiwan Sugar Corporation, the potential department of environmental technology of Chinese Petroleum Corporation and the biotechnological divisions of other colleges and universities, in the hope of providing our advanced research professionals for these institutions.
