Introduction

The Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Leisure Studies (KHL) is located in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kaohsiung University. It was formed in 2001, and is the first program to be offered in a public comprehensive university in Taiwan.

The goal of this department aims to develop enhanced knowledge and leadership in the core sport science and leisure management, alongside development of communication skills and information technology. Built on a foundation of social and natural sciences, this program also draws on a broad range of disciplines to provide high quality undergraduate education to current and future professionals.

This program has linked its mission with the country in three ways:

To prepare individuals for leadership and professional positions in sports and leisure through education and training.

To contribute to the advancement of sport and leisure services and the enhancement of the quality of individual and community life.

To provide service to community, to region, to nation, to the Asia Pacific region, and beyond.

The Sports Education and Management concentration offers a curriculum that educates undergraduate student in the biological, clinical, and social basis of human physical activity. Students will develop a clear understanding of the scientific principles underlying sporting performance and human responses to exercise, and learn to apply their knowledge in laboratory work, coaching, projects and industry placements. It is an excellent preparation for individuals interested in pursuing professional opportunities in a wide range of physical activities and allied-health-related professions such as exercise rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy, medicine, and nursing. Recent years have found an increasing emphasis in the fields of ergonomics, geriatrics and specialized application in evaluation and rehabilitation.

The Leisure and Recreation concentration combines a knowledge of people, environments, and management into an academic package that prepares graduate for careers in a variety of public and private agencies. It offers a curriculum based on recreation leadership and management as it relates to private business, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. It prepares students to assume leadership, supervisory and administrative responsibilities in various leisure and recreation settings. The global nature of this curriculum also provides insight into the roles and responsibilities of the industry from a social perspective, as well as the nature of service-based enterprises, business ethics, and social constraints. In addition, practical knowledge regarding operational aspects of the industry enable students to apply skills learned within the field. Courses include recreation supervision, leadership and programming, group dynamics, and issues in recreation and leisure.

To earn a Bachelor of Science degree in KHL, students must complete the following general requirements:

1.Earn a at least of 148 credit hours with a minimum grade of 60% for each course/credit.
2. Fulfill 32 credit hours of the General Education course requirements, including .information technology and language courses, regulated by the Ministry of Education of The Republic of China .
3. Complete 110 credit hours of major core course requirements.
4. Complete at least 6 credit hours of elective courses from emphasize area.
