Department of Western Languages and Literature |
 |
|
Introduction |
|
In the year 2000, the University of Kaohsiung founded the Department of Western Languages and Literature to cultivate well-read literature majors and culturally-literate language experts who, depending on how their interests develop, would also graduate with an appreciation and working knowledge of other related areas of scholastic and professional interest. During their first two years, while attending general education courses and acquiring a sound liberal education, our students also take courses specially designed to hone their English communicative skills and their ability to comprehend Anglo-American literature. During the junior and senior years, the Department, while offering courses that provide an ever-deepening knowledge of language, literature and culture, off ers other professionally oriented courses that cater to the students' scholastic interests or career preferences. Students can opt to deepen their knowledge of culture and literature and /or attend courses within a certain track of study. Areas of study include:
1) linguistics
2) English language teaching
3) a second foreign language (French, German, Spanish, or Japanese)
4) translation and interpreting (between Chinese and English)
5) business and information management. |

Curriculum Design |
|
| Special features of the curriculum include:
1. Solid training in language skills
Students are placed into small classes, thus intensifying their training and ensuring more effective learning.
2. Comprehensive Literature and Culture Courses
Introductory courses prepare our students for more advanced studies in culture and literature. Study of the historical background of each literary period will provide a better link between the works themselves and the literary traditions of the time. More advanced study will entail courses in literary movements, literary theory, philosophy and ideological trends.
3. Linguistics-related Courses
Apart from Introduction to Linguistics, we offer some elective courses that aim to investigate the deeper properties which all languages share and to explore the boundaries between language and speech, language and machine, language and society, and language and literature.
4. Teacher Training Curriculum
This Curriculum aims to impart a basic knowledge of the field and to enable students to develop competence as secondary or elementary school teachers if they choose to pursue this career.
5. Business-Oriented Courses
As Taiwan's economy and market is largely international, many western language graduates are recruited by industry. The curriculum integrates modern technology and business management with foreign language and culture studies to furnish students with a competitive edge in the job market and for admission to graduate schools in business management. |
