In June 2002, the University started to organise the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which was then formally set up in May 2004 with permission of the Ministry of Education. Under the College are the Department of Western Languages and Literature, the Department of Kinesiology, Health and Leisure Studies, and the Department of Traditional Arts, which were established in 2000, 2001 and 2002 respectively. In August 2002, the Language Centre was established. It signed a collaborative agreement with Educational Testing Service (ETS) to sponsor the administration of TOEIC and TOEFL-PBT in the South. In 2004, the Department of Kinesiology, Health and Leisure Studies launched the two-year professional programme. At present, the College is filing an application for the establishment of the Department of East Asia Studies to amplify the teaching and research of the education of social sciences. |

Focuses of Development |

| At present, the three departments under the College offer graduate programmes only. For a more complete development, the College will apply for the establishment of the Institute of the Western Languages and Literature, the Department of East Asian Studies, the Institute of Kinesiology, Health and Leisure Studies, and the Institute of Traditional Arts to provide postgraduate programmes. In addition, the College will cooperate with the Graduate Institute of Urban Development and Architecture to set up the Development Centre for Monuments and Art Education. The College does not own its dedicated building at the time being, but it will continue urging the construction of “Humanities and Social Sciences Building” for future needs of development. |

Integral Scheme |

| The College, combining disciplines of humanities and social sciences, expects to cultivate social-minded humanities students and humane-minded social sciences students. In others words, the College wish to produce professionals with humane and social spirit. The discipline of social sciences of the College, different from traditional ones, lays particular stress on the new and developing leisure studies, which incorporate ecology, agriculture, management and sports injuries and prevention. Furthermore, the College cooperates with other colleges or departments in the University to promotes the integration of teaching and research as well as course exchanges, which include “WTO Programme”, “Foreign Affairs Translation Programme”, “Business Management and Information Programme”, and “Architecture and Art Education”. The College will also promote international academic exchanges and collaboration to stretch students' global visions. In addition, the Language Centre provides a variety of English and testing services to make its contribution to the internationalisation of the country. |

Future |

In order to cultivate students in a sound and cosmopolitan education, the College will seek progress in the following three dimensions : first, implementing localization and globalisation; second, upgrading services of culture and art in the South; and third, collaborating with other colleges in the University. |
